The assessment must be carried out by a qualified Domestic Energy Assessor who must also be accredited with a scheme approved by the Government. Some of the areas looked at will include;
- room and water heating system
- insulation levels
- glazing
- lighting
- property type, age, construction and dimensions
It should take approximately one hour depending on the size of the property. Access will be needed to all rooms including the loft area where possible. It would be beneficial that the owner is on site during the assessment to answer any questions the assessor may have.
Why is it Important
Home energy use is responsible for 27 per cent of the UK’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, which contribute to climate change. The average household in the UK creates about six tonnes of carbon dioxide every year and this could be reduced by around two tonnes by making homes more energy efficient.
Low cost measures you can take to improve the energy efficiency of your property:
- using energy saving light bulbs

- 270 mm loft insulation
- 160 mm insulation for hot water cylinder
- cavity wall insulation where appropriate
